The challenge
A budget engineer only swaps the spreadsheet for a system that reaches the same number they check by hand. And the work happens on site and at the office, not always online. The product had to get the math exactly right, handle budgets with hundreds of line items without freezing and keep working offline without losing or duplicating data when the connection comes back.
Our approach
React 19 with TypeScript and Vite on the front, shipped as a PWA and also packaged as a desktop app with Tauri for Windows and macOS. Data lives on the device (IndexedDB in the browser, SQLite on the desktop) and syncs with the API through an idempotent outbox, with version-based conflict detection. The NestJS API runs on Fastify with Prisma and PostgreSQL, with Row-Level Security isolating companies, role-based permissions and an audit trail. All calculations live in a single package with decimal precision, and the editor virtualizes the line-item list to keep the screen fluid on large budgets.
The result
The system is in production, used by an engineering firm. During validation, a real renovation budget was built from scratch through the UI and the direct cost matched the original spreadsheet to the cent. The same test found an error in the spreadsheet itself: a tax that had been left over from an earlier version.
